For my OJT, I came to my school to have myself trained (and self-trained) in Android programming. Just for you who are not into tech stuff, Android is the program pretty much used by most mobile phones, usually the touch-screen ones and the reason why it’s so widely used by these companies (HTC, Samsung…) is that it’s an open-source platform, meaning everyone can make their own programs, share it or sell it. It’s like the Linux of mobile phones. What’s more, because it’s open to everyone, even the top app makers are bringing in their apps to the platform.
For starters, I need to install some stuff, like the software development kit and such. Moreover, I also need to learn the very backbone of this platform:Java. After searching for tutorials, finally, I know the basics of Java and I can actually say it’s super easier than C++ programming language. To test all your programs, the SDK provides an emulator. The problem is that the emulator demands so much resources that the ones who gave me the tutorials for Android said that it’ll be more ideal to use a phone. Um…I don’t have an Android phone so they provided us noobs with two Wildfire units for room use only.
Of course, me as a gadgeteer, I can’t take my hands off the unit. 😀 I so want one… 😦
A decent one would cost around 15K Php which is a tall order for me since I’m still broke. Meh, can you help me buy one? Just a joke. After some puny learning, I was able to make a program with input and output operations, a basic calculator and it is still installed in the phone when I left it in the office. Now I think I’m beginning to make progress and I hope this Android programming will help me a lot. 😀
Here’s a video of the calculator I made. It’s super basic so there’s nothing interesting really, but still an achievement for me who’s not into these kinds of things
